A hand-illustrated memoir zine about how libraries became a forgotten refuge — a safe space in a chaotic childhood, and a reminder of why they still matter today.

The Forgotten Refuge is a hand-illustrated, half-size zine about finding safety, imagination, and identity in libraries.
Annette Zimmerman shares a personal story of growing up in an unstable home where possessions and places were never guaranteed — except one: the library. From elementary school bullies to high school discoveries, each vignette reveals how libraries became a refuge of continuity, choice, and hope.
With original pen-and-ink illustrations, this zine is both memoir and advocacy — a reminder that libraries are more than bookshelves. They are sanctuaries, especially for children who need safe spaces to belong.
Printed, folded and stapled by hand.
